Born on a farm in Northern Illinois, Kris graduated from Lanark High School in 1978. She received her undergraduate degree in 1982 from Cornell College, a small Liberal Arts college in Mt. Vernon, Iowa, with double majors: English and Sociology. Kris earned her law degree from Valparaiso University in 1985.

Following graduation from law school, Kris married Timothy Newhouse (also a Valaparaiso Law School graduate) and moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan. She joined the Michigan Bar in January of 1986 and has been in private practice, working mainly in the areas of adoption, juvenile law, and general probate for over 30 years.
